Alternative Options & Important Considerations

2GO Travel - Alternative to Toledo Route

2GO Travel offers direct overnight ferry from Cebu City to Bacolod (via sea, not RORO). Alternative if Toledo RORO is fully booked or weather is bad.

Duration: 20-24 hours (overnight)
Cost: ₱1,500-3,000 (depends on cabin class)
AC Cabins available for passengers
Daily departures, check schedule online
Note: Pet in carrier travels with you in cabin. Shorter route via Toledo RORO is recommended for pet comfort.

Typhoon Season Considerations

Typhoon Season: June - November

Peak typhoon activity: August - October

RORO Cancellations
  • Toledo-San Carlos RORO may cancel in rough seas
  • EB Aznar fastcraft is more affected by weather
  • Lite Shipping RORO is more weather-resistant

Mitigation Strategies
  • Build in 3-5 day buffer in Cebu before final travel date
  • Monitor PAGASA: pagasa.dost.gov.ph
  • Check Weather Underground and AccuWeather
  • Follow Montenegro Lines and 2GO on Facebook
Flight Considerations
  • Qatar Airways flights generally unaffected by local typhoons
  • Typhoons may cause flight delays/cancellations
  • Book flexible tickets or travel insurance
  • Cebu airport may close in severe weather
Emergency Contacts
  • Coast Guard Cebu: (032) 232-2101
  • Montenegro Lines: (032) 255-1721

Essential Guide

Complete Crate Buying & Modification Guide

Everything you need to know to buy the correct crates and make proper modifications for Qatar Airways compliance

Quick Summary

Crate #1 & #2 Series 400 (91×64×69 cm) For Maine Coons (individual)
Crate #3 Series 300 (81×57×61 cm) For Tabbies (shared)
Alternative Series 500 (102×70×76 cm) If Maine Coons fail sit test
Brands Petmate Vari Kennel, Sky Kennel Or equivalent IATA-approved

CRITICAL: Door Latch Types - This is the #1 Mistake People Make

Spring-Loaded Latch (✅ YES) vs Dial/Twist Lock (❌ NO)

✅ Spring-Loaded Latch / Push-Button Latch
  • Simple metal catch that snaps shut
  • Built into Petmate Vari Kennel/Sky Kennel doors
  • What Qatar Airways accepts
❌ Dial Lock / Twist Lock
  • Plastic dial you turn to "lock"
  • Marketed as "quick-release" or "easy-lock"
  • Maxi Zoo sells many crates with these
  • Qatar Airways may reject - plastic mechanism can fail
What to Ask When Shopping: "Do you have this crate WITHOUT the dial lock? I need bolt-through design for international flight."

Qatar Airways Crate Requirements

Door Latch Type

Spring-loaded or push-button ONLY

❌ Dial/twist locks rejected

Assembly Bolts

Metal M6 nuts and bolts ONLY

❌ Plastic clips rejected

Ventilation

Max 19mm × 19mm for CATS

Most crates have 25mm (dog standard) - use 13mm mesh overlay

Water Bowls

2 per crate, externally accessible

Must fill from outside

Weight Limit

32 kg per crate maximum

Your Maine Coons will be ~10 kg each

Material

Rigid plastic ONLY

❌ Soft-sided carriers rejected

Crate Features Checklist - What to Buy

Print this and take it shopping:
BOLT-THROUGH DESIGN (holes in corners, NOT dial locks)
METAL DOOR with spring-loaded latch
VENTILATION on 3+ sides
RIGID plastic (NO soft sides)
Series 400 or 500 equivalent size
SMOOTH interior (no sharp edges)

RED FLAGS - What NOT to Buy

Dial Locks / Twist Locks

Plastic mechanism, Qatar may reject

Alternative: Bolt-through design

Plastic Clips / Snaps

Will fail under stress

Alternative: Metal M6 bolts

Soft-Sided Carriers

Completely unacceptable

Alternative: Rigid plastic only

Wheels

Must be removed for flight

Alternative: Buy without wheels

"Quick-Release" Features

Usually plastic, not flight-safe

Alternative: Simple bolt design

Small "Pet Carrier" Size

Too small for adult cats in flight

Alternative: Series 300 minimum

The Cardboard Test - DO NOT SKIP!

You can't return used crates. Test first with €20 cardboard.

When to Test: After February 20, 2026 vet visit

Once you have cat measurements, build a cardboard mockup of the crate interior BEFORE buying.

How to Build the Test

1
Get Cardboard

Currys/PC World, Harvey Norman, or appliance stores. Ask for fridge/washer boxes - they're usually free!

2
Build Series 400 Mockup

Interior dimensions: 86cm (L) × 59cm (W) × 61cm (H)

These are INSIDE dimensions where the cat actually lives

3
Test All 4 Cats

Lure them in with treats. Test turning, sitting, and lying down.

The Sit Test - CRITICAL for Maine Coons

Why: When a cat sits (the "Egyptian Pose"), the entire body length becomes vertical height. This is often taller than standing!

The Test: Hold a treat above the cat's head so they sit fully upright (bum on floor, legs straight, spine vertical).

PASS

Ears clear with 1-2cm space

→ Series 400 is OK

FAIL

Ears touch/bend against roof

→ Need Series 500

If EITHER Maine Coon fails, you need Series 500 for BOTH cats. They need identical crates for airline handling.

Complete Test Checklist

Turnaround Test (Length) Can cat do full 360° turn without touching walls?
Sit Test (Height) Do ears clear roof with 1-2cm space when sitting upright?
Lie Down Test Can cat lie comfortably (stretched or curled)?

Step-by-Step Modifications

1

The Bolt Swap (MANDATORY 🔴)

~15-20 min per crate

Qatar Airways WILL reject crates with plastic fasteners.

  1. Assemble the crate (top half onto bottom half)
  2. Throw away ALL plastic caps/nuts from the box
  3. Push M6 bolt from OUTSIDE → IN
  4. Put washer on bolt thread on the INSIDE
  5. Screw on wing nut on the INSIDE
  6. Tighten hard with your fingers (use pliers if needed)
Result: Crate is solid metal-locked and 100% Qatar compliant
2

The Mesh Armour (Max 19mm Ventilation 🔴)

~20-30 min per crate

Qatar requires max 19mm × 19mm ventilation for CATS. Most crates have 25mm (dog standard). Using 13mm mesh (easier to source) is still compliant.

  1. Look at side ventilation holes - probably 25mm (too big)
  2. Use snips to cut 13mm wire mesh ~3cm larger than window
  3. Place mesh on OUTSIDE of crate window
  4. Use black cable ties to secure (every 10cm)
  5. Do the same for the metal door
  6. Cut off cable tie tails, rotate sharp bits away from handles
Result: Ventilation reduced to 13mm - exceeds Qatar's 19mm requirement
5

The ID Check (MANDATORY 🔴)

~10 min per crate
  1. Take thick black permanent marker
  2. Write clearly on TOP and SIDE:
LIVE ANIMAL
DESTINATION: CEBU (CEB)
FLIGHT: QR [Insert Flight Number]
OWNER: [Your Full Name]
PHONE: [Your Philippines Phone Number]
DATE: [Departure Date DD/MM/YYYY]
  1. Add "THIS WAY UP" arrows (↑ ↑ ↑) on top and sides
  2. Attach "LIVE ANIMAL" labels on all 4 sides plus top

Budget Breakdown

Low-End Estimate (Special Order, Pickup)

Item Quantity Unit Price Total
Series 400 Crate 2 €150-€200 €300-€400
Series 300 Crate 1 €120-€150 €120-€150
Metal Bolts 3 crates €10-€20 each €30-€60
Mash + Cable Ties - €15-€25 €15-€25
Funnel + Tubing - €8-€12 €8-€12
TOTAL €473-€647
To stay in budget (€420-€550): Special order with pickup (no shipping), buy bolts from hardware store (€10-€20 vs €30-€50 from pet supplier), negotiate price or ask for price matching.

✅ YES - You can legally own and register a vehicle (CR/OR) in your name

Condo Unit

✅ YES - If foreigners own less than 40% of the building

Land

❌ NO - Must be in Jesslyn's name

House Structure

✅ YES - You can own the bricks, just not the dirt underneath

06

Avoiding the "Foreigner Premium" (Scam Prevention)

Practical wisdom for daily life in the Philippines

The "Jesslyn Buffer"

For inquiries (rent, repairs, hiring), let Jesslyn speak first. Prices often double when a foreigner appears.

Trikes/Pedicabs

Ask the fare before you sit down. Better yet, watch what locals pay.
